« Vertigo(s) » / 2005
comission by the city of Hyères

In some twenty or so images, the Swiss artist presents her portrait of the town of Hyères. A horse with a blue look and a red coat, a young ethereal girl on the edge of still water, a child’s chair forsaken… Omens of what is to come or scars of what was ? The signs follow one another, exhibits which mark the way, the weave of a fantasm : the town, night-time and its illusions. And, to paint this drama of the everyday : a chiaroscuro. These images possess their own shadow. Some seem to confide in others and, by the measure of these reflections, one is tempted to undertake a reconstruction as a means of recapturing the thread of the story. No single image reaches out in absolute truth, instead, they all allow us to see, without showing anything in particular. Eva Lauterlein photographer of the unspoken and the unreal, maintains the mystery of the cliché, of its appearance an dits means. The image resists, refuses its own unmasking. We will not learn whether this reality is staged or has been chanced upon. But one is certain, we will have been moved.
